HACKLE PREP FOR
ELKHAIR CADDIS

1) Grip hackle tip in hackle pliers.

2) Make one wrap of hackle at hackle tie in.

3) When you get back up to top, start forward as you wrap.

4) Make wraps in an evenly spaced spiral around shank. This is called palmering.

5) It should take about 8 wraps for a size 12 hook till you reach end of dubbed body, I show four for the sake of visual clarity.

6) After last hackle wrap, hold hackle above hook with right hand, grab thread bobbin with left on your side of hook and make one wrap of thread over hackle tips. Repeat 3 times to secure hackle.

7) Cut excess hackle material.

8) Secure with four more wraps of thread.

9) Trim tops of hackle barbs to make way for elk hair wing.

10) Fly should look like this. Now for the fun part. Time to Tie In Hair Wing.
