DRY FLY HACKLE PREPERATION
and
SELECTION

SELECTION
For more info see: Materialsand Hackle Selection

1) For standard dry flies
(i.e. adams, cahill, wullfs, etc.) or parachutes, you want a rooster neck hackle with a barb length of 2 to 1 & 1/2 times hook gap.

2) For a caddis fly or body to a stimulator, pick out a good quality rooster neck hackle with barb lengths that are 1 and 1/2 to 1 times hook gap.

HACKLE PREPERATION

1) Cut off any web or fuzz from the base of the hackle stem.

2) Pull down barbs at first 1/4 inch of stem. Trim these barbs, this leaves a rough texture on the stem where we will be tying it to hook shank.
3) All hackles have a dull and shiny side. We will tie in hackle so that dull side faces toward hook eye. This will result in most hackle barbs leaning forward and will help fly sit upright on water. Now you are ready to wrap hackle for:

Standard Dry fly
ie. Adams, RedQuill or Light Cahill

Parachute

or Hackle Tie In for Caddis Fly.
