HACKLE BARB PREP

The following procedure can be applied to other materials like:
hen back or neck hackle feathers, peacock sword feathers, guinea feathers, etc.

These materials can be used for operations other than tails.
Use for: tails, beard style hackle, wings.

1) Select a hackle feather from the side of a creme or light ginger rooster neck or saddle. Make sure barbs are at least 1 and 1/2 hook shank length. If you are tying in a shorter tail than hook shank length (ie. nymph tail) you can select a hackle with shorter barbs, say only 1 hook shank length.

2).Holding hackle tip in one hand, strip soft web fibers from base of stem base on both sides. Using light pressure, run fingers down stem to force hackle barbs to stand out perpendicular from hackle stem.

3)Like this. For dries, make sure there is no web, use only the hard, stiff and shiny hackle barbs.

For wets, just look for the part of the hackle that has good color.

4) Grab tips in fingers while keeping tips even. Cut barbs close to hackle stem.

Three hands would help!

5) While holding barbs tips in left fingers, push barb butts together with right fingers and slowly release tension of tips in left to keep tips even.

6. Should look like this.
